This test implements the IPIP–HEXACO inventory developed by Ashton, Lee, and Goldberg (2007) as a public-domain alternative to the HEXACO-PI. The IPIP–HEXACO scales were empirically derived to measure the six HEXACO domains: Honesty–Humility, Emotionality, eXtraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness to Experience.
Construct Validity
The IPIP–HEXACO was constructed by correlating 2,036 IPIP items with the 24 HEXACO-PI facet scales in a large community sample (N = 411) and selecting the 10 highest-correlating items per facet. The resulting scales showed clear recovery of the six-factor HEXACO structure and that the six factors accounted for 63.5% of variance (HEXACO-PI) and 68.4% of variance (IPIP–HEXACO).
Internal Consistency
Internal consistency reliabilities ranged from .73 to .88 with a mean of .81.
Convergent Validity
Strong convergence was demonstrated between IPIP–HEXACO and the original HEXACO-PI Convergent correlations ranged from .57 to .83 (and .76 to .98 after disattenuation for imperfect reliability) with a mean of .72 (.90 after disattenuation). Convergent correlations for the six domain-level scales ranged from .76 to .86, with a mean of .82.
Discriminant Validity
The IPIP–HEXACO demonstrates moderate inter-factor correlations, supporting construct distinctiveness. Within the IPIP–HEXACO, the highest domain correlation was r = .41 (Honesty–Humility with Agreeableness) Within the HEXACO-PI, the highest domain correlation was r = .32 (Extraversion with Openness).
